Not able to move walls in their South Philadelphia row home, this young couple had a hard time to determine what to do with the 135-square-foot shotgun-style kitchen area. For beginners, the big devices protruded, and various little devices cluttered the counter tops. An open metal shelving system contributed to the messy appearance. The cabinets were mismatched, with a few of them having actually been discovered on the street by previous house owners. The floorings were used down. And a ceiling fan offered inadequate lighting.
Wishing to make the most of storage and develop an elegant appearance in a traditional design that would fit their house, the couple relied on designer Sean Lewis. He removed the kitchen area back and produced stunning custom-made cherry cabinets and drawers in an abundant honey stain. He combined those with light gray marble-look quartz counter tops and unlacquered brass hardware for a quickly ageless appearance. White-and-gray marble checkerboard floor covering, historic print wallpaper and easy white square backsplash tiles raise the traditional design, while brand-new devices, hardworking storage elements and lighting position the area in the contemporary age.
